In June, 1891, Knox County got its second Catholic cemetery
when St. Joseph's was opened on thirty-three acres of land just west of
Galesburg. It continues to be actively used today.
The first Catholic cemetery in Knox County was St.
Mary's. It was opened on five acres of land adjoining Lake
George (later renamed Lake Rice) just east of Galesburg. It is located in
the southwest corner of section 7, Knox Township, Knox County. Lot sales
were discontinued in St. Mary's in June, 1891, although burials continued there
until at least 1980.
Many early Catholics of Knox County were are also buried in St.
Augustine Catholic Cemetery in Union Township,
Fulton County, and in
St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Canton, Fulton County, Illinois.
