In 1863,
Knox County got its first Catholic Cemetery when St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery was opened on five acres of land adjoining Lake
George (later renamed Lake Rice) just east of Galesburg. It is located in
the southwest corner of section 7, Knox Township, Knox County. Lots were
sold until June 1, 1891.
